Supported Learning Program Summaries

Crescent Heights High School (CHHS) believes in supporting all learners in the most appropriate educational setting. CHHS is "Dedicated to Leaning, Committed to Community"

Learning Assistant Program (LAP)

Jr. LAP Program Overview (Grades 7-8):

The Jr. LAP program focuses on providing students with individualized vocational and life skills based programming. Jr. LAP students are given the opportunity to apply their learning to their home and school environments through hands-on and cooperative learning activities. The low student-teacher ratio allows students to work in an environment that fosters life-long learning and mastery of concepts. Students leave the LAP program with essential life and vocational skills necessary for daily living.

Sr. LAP Program Overview (Grades 9-12):

The Sr. LAP Program prepares students to live in their community based on the belief that each student is assured equal access to the educational options and support provided to all students of the same age group. The Sr. LAP program provides students with the opportunity to work in a general education environment for some classes while giving extra support for core curriculum and instructional options, with adaptations and modifications, assistive technology, and communication strategies necessary to meet individual needs. The purpose of the Sr. LAP is to ensure that every student, regardless of the severity of his or her disability, is capable of living, working, and participating in their community. Person-Centered transition planning is implemented to ensure that all students have access to proper services for planning their future.

Other Programs

Transition Program Overview (Grades 7-8):

The transition program supports students as they move from elementary to middle school. A smaller class size allows the two core teachers to closely monitor and support student learning. The transition teachers reinforce key concepts and present the regular grade seven curriculum at a slight slower pace. The transition program builds resiliency in students and strengthens the student’s problem solving skills so that students are able to transition back to the regular program when they are ready. The transition program is a voluntary program; students are recommended for the program by their grade six elementary teachers and/or parents can request that their child be considered for the program.

K and E Program Overview (Grades 9-11):

The Knowledge and Employability (K and E) program addresses students who are finding one or two academic areas challenging but whose primary objectives are to become prepared for employment, further studies and citizenship. K and E gives students who learn best through experiences and hands-on learning, an opportunity to use a different approach to learning curriculum. Class sizes are smaller to facilitate the needs of the students in the program.

Possible Program Requirements:

Student's can have an Individualized Program Plan (IPP) that specifies individualized goals and objectives that provide access to Alberta's core curriculum and to meet student needs. Students in K and E develop a program plan that clearly outlines student's goals and tracks the courses needed to achieve such goals. Any placement in Supported Learning Programs are made by the approval of the district, cognitive assessments, Alberta Special Education coding and consultation with school personnel and family.
