Health Services Summer Placements

The Health Services Summer Internship program is a unique Learning Experience developed by CAREERS: The Next Generation in southeastern Alberta. This program allows qualified grade 11 high school students the opportunity to explore a health-related career and develop employability skills. During the summer months, students work with a health services provider for eight weeks and earn one high school credit for every 25 hours worked as well as a wage. Some participating health service providers offer a second summer internship for selected grade 12 students.

This program is only available for entry in the student's Grade 11 year. It is for students with a genuine interest in a career in the Health Services Industry. This is a very competitive program and interested students must maintain an excellent academic record and be an Excellent School Citizen.

Health Services Internship Normal Schedule

November to March:	Presentations to all Grade 11 classes on Health Services Careers by CAREERS: Next Generation
March:	Health Services providers develop placement descriptions and provide them to the High Schools through CAREERS.
April:	Students complete application forms and submit them to the Off-Campus Coordinator and CAREERS: Next Generation
May:	Top applicants are selected for interviews.
May/June:	Interviews are arranged with the health services providers and potential student interns.
June:	Health services providers make their final decisions; students are notified.
July:	Internships begin approx July 3.
August:	Internships end approx Aug 24.

Special thanks to Laurel and Lisa and their Therapy Dept for this wonderful internship. Leigha found the experience very valuable and was able to spend time in all three areas of Therapy Services (Physical, Occupational, and Respiratory)

Leigha returned to Therapy services for a second summer internship in 09. Thanks to everyone in that department once again!

Ciarra also returned to 4 West for her second summer internship. Leigha and Ciarra were both able to return because the were successfuly enrolled in a Post Secondary Health Services related program and were asked back by their respective Departments.

In the summer of 09 we had 3 more students uccessful in receiving one of these very competitive positions. Ashley above, spent her summer as a nurse shadow at Riverview Care Center.

Alexa as a Nurse Shadow on 5 West.

and Megan worked with the Occupational Health and Safety Department at the Hospital.

Alexa had enrolled in a Health Services related program at a Post -Secondary Institution so she was successful in obtaining a second summer internship at MHRH after graduating on June 2010.

Kayla was successful in obtaining a internship in the summer of 2010 with the Chronic Disease Management and Healthy Living Program of Palliser Health. This placement gave her lots of valuable experience working with Doctors, Nurses, Therapists, and other Health Care professionals at the River Heights Professional Center.
