Welcome to CRESCENT HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL (CHHS). CHHS is a grade 7 to 12 Junior/Senior high school located at 1201 Division Avenue NE in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Crescent Heights is one of four High Schools in our city supporting a population of some 60,000 people.

With a student population of 1200 students, there are approximately 210 students per grade. The junior high school students are grouped in homeroom classes while the senior high school students are in classes independent of each other.

CHHS offers a wide variety of extracurricular programs and sports activities for students to participate in. You may view a few of the activities below and through the various links available from the homepage:

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students, parents, and staff should be aware that the Alberta School Act requires students to conduct themselves in a responsible manner according to the following guidelines:

  • avail themselves of meaningful and relevant learning experiences
  • develop an appreciation for knowledge and model enthusiastic and continuous learning
  • be diligent in pursuing studies
  • attend school regularly and punctually
  • co-operate fully with those who provide educational programs
  • comply with the rules of the school
  • account to his/her teachers for his/her conduct
  • respect the rights of others

 

  • CHHS STUDENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO:

  • CHHS STUDENTS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO:

  • a safe, clean environment both at school and on school busses.
  • maintain the safety and cleanliness of the school and busses, avoid all forms of verbal or physical violence and apply safe operating procedures in the use of all equipment.
  • be respected. They shall not be subject to prejudice, harassment, intimidation or mean-spirited teasing.
  • treat others with courtesy and respect and cooperate with all school staff.
  • the security of personal property.
  • leave undisturbed others’ personal property.
  • peaceful, well organized instruction by competent teachers.
  • contribute to the good order of all classes, to comply with the school rules to attend and be punctual for all classes, to be diligent in all studies and to consult the school website for homework assignments when absent.
  • be taught, counselled and guided by professional staff whose top priority is the students’ welfare.
  • comply with all direction and requests of staff personnel.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

  AGENDAS: 

Students are expected to carry their agendas with them. Teachers will expect students to write down homework and upcoming tests in their agendas. Parents can check for current assignments in the agenda.

 

CAFETERIA

CHHS provides a full service cafeteria.  Eating of lunches, snacks and the like is restricted to the cafeteria and designated student gathering areas.  As a courtesy to others, students are expected to clear their tables.  Hours of operation are:     

            7:45 AM – 9:30 AM

            10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

            20 minutes after dismissal

 COMMUNICATION 

      The school newsletter is published bi-monthly and printed copies can be available in the office.  The newsletter is also posted on the school’s web site www.chhsweb.ca

CRIME STOPPERS PROGRAM

The Student Crime Stoppers Program encourages and assists students in maintaining a safe, positive environment. Students my contact any of the school administrators or the school resource officer to report a crime.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES 

Emergency procedure routines will be practiced regularly under the direction of the school administration.

 ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM

The CHHS recycling program aspires to be environmentally friendly by reducing the amount of paper and energy consumed and the amount of waste generated.

 EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Students at CHHS can participate in a variety of extracurricular activities depending on their interest and experience.  Many clubs and teams carry a user fee that must be paid prior to participation in the activity.  School fees must also be paid in order to participate in after school activities.  The following is a partial list of school activities:

HALL PASSES

Students benefit the most when they are in their classrooms during instructional time and engaged in learning. Interruptions to instructional time must be avoided as much as possible. Students who are outside of the classroom during instructional time may disrupt both their own and other students’ education. To minimize disruptions, students who need to leave their classroom during instructional time must carry a hall pass with them at all times. In the event that a student needs to leave the room, the teacher will provide the student with a hall pass and the student is expected to keep the pass visible until he or she returns.

   HOMEWORK

The amount of homework varies. You should, however, expectyour son or daughter to spend about 30 to 60 minutes, three to five times a week on homework and review.  In addition, making a habit of reading and reviewing notes will help your child be successful. Homework expectations increase as students move up through the grades.

 LIBRARY

The CHHS library has a wide range of resources.  Computers are available with a variety of software programs and Internet access.  Student I.D. Cards are required to sign out items.  Overdue fines are 10¢/item/day to a maximum of $2.00/item.  Hours of operation are: Monday to Friday         8:00 AM – 3:20 PM

 PARENT CONNECT

Parents can now view their child’s class assignments, grading information and attendance through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please go to the CHHS website at www.chhsweb.ca and click on the PowerSchool link. If you have any problems getting on to the site, please contact the main office.

 PARKING

All parking areas are designated.  Vehicles may be ticketed and/or towed for violations.  Students are expected to enter the school building promptly once the vehicle they are in has been parked. Students are not permitted to park in Visitor Parking areas.

 SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

The School Resource Officer develops a rapport between students and the City Police Service and also assists with school functions.

 SIGNING OUT / SIGNING IN

  Please sign in or out at the office if you are late or leaving early.

 STUDENT COUNCILS

The student government of CHHS is designed to represent the entire student body.  The junior and senior student councils plan and organize numerous student activities, participate in policy development and promote positive citizenship.

 STUDENT LOCKERS

The school provides each student with the use of a locker.  Students will select their locker on registration day.  For security purposes, locks must be purchased from the school for $8.00.  Lockers are the property of the school and may be inspected at any time.  Fines will be levied for damage or extra clean-up.  The combination to your lock should be kept confidential.

Students are discouraged from sharing lockers.

  • Student lockers should be locked at all times.
  • Students will be responsible for all items in their lockers.
  • Items left in the lockers are disposed of at the end of the school year.
  • Lockers are school property and in the interest of student safety may be searched on a regular and random basis.

SUPER SEVEN ASSEMBLIES

  •   Each month one student from each grade seven class is recognized for good citizenship, positive school behaviour and effort.  The student is introduced at an assembly, receives a certificate and a copy of the presentation speech, has his/her picture displayed and has lunch with the Principal.  Parents of the Super Sevens are notified and invited to attend the celebration.
  • Students are strongly discouraged from sharing lockers.

TRANSPORTATION

            While on the bus, students are under the authority of the bus driver and the school.  Students who refuse to obey the bus regulations may forfeit the privilege of riding the bus.  Contact Totem Transportation at 527-6232 or Mr. Pat Grisonich, vice principal, at 527-6641 if you have questions or concerns.

 TUTORIAL TIME

Teachers may provide time during the lunch period for students to receive individual assistance. This supportive service should be taken advantage of by all students, especially those who are struggling academically.  Students will also have the opportunity to finish missed assignments or work on homework every Thursday from 3:20-4:30 in the Library.

 VISITORS

All visitors to the school are required to check in at the office.
